Have you been considering organizing a family photo shoot but have yet to do it? Do you just remind yourself that you have enough pictures on your phone- who cares if they are blurry, crooked or your kid is always blinking?!? Well if you need a little encouragement to get going I have put together a few reasons why you should reach out and schedule your family photo shoot!
So You Have Photos That Actually Look Good.
Our smart phones and point and shoot cameras are easy and accessible ways that we capture our families and events. Although you can certainly get some banger shots with them, most people are not able to get consistent and good looking portraits. Often it has very little to do with the camera, but more to do with lighting, skill, time and software! Professional photographers know how to use light for portraiture- that means nice skin tones, complimentary shadows and no over or underexposed faces. They have the skill to work the camera and equipment they have so they get that action shot or know how to pose you so that double chin is tucked away.
Photography is their business so they are taking the time to curate photos so you are left with the best shots.
Finally they have the software! This is probably the most important part of what makes your photos look good! The digital dark room is all about final touches that can hide your adult onset acne, reduce your husbands eyebrow furrow and take your photos into the modern era with style.
2. You Get To Be In The Photos.
I hear so many Moms ask me to prioritize photos of THEM with their kids. “I have so many photos of my kids, but I’m not in any of them”. This is the best part of having a session with your family photographer. There is now actually photo evidence that you exist and your children look at you with smiles and love in their eyes!
3. Have A Variety Of Photos.
Most likely your photographer is going to have you do a variety of poses or actions. They may even take you to a second location. This increases the possibility of getting better photos and it also means that you have more usable photos. If you like to share your photos on social or display them in your house it will keep things interesting. You can now have different photos to print for your gallery wall, to send to relatives, a different one for your screen savers and probably another one for your social accounts. I can’t remember the last time my family let me take 20 different poses of them with my iPhone.
4. Get Perspective.
Your photographer is going to be able to take some photos that you would not think of. They might get you to jump around, lay down, roll over… but the point is that you will get unique shots that you would probably not take yourself because either you don’t want to climb up on that chair or maybe because your family wouldn’t listen to you when you ask them to hike over to that cool looking location.
5. Have Photos You Are Excited To Share.
Because you are in the photos and they because they are professional looking you will be stoked to share them! Sharing photos is 80 percent of what makes our social platforms interesting. It is the best way to share with friends and family who don’t see you all the time how you guys are doing! Plus you know you love getting likes and comments on how good looking your family is!
6. Get Printable.
This goes along with point number 5. Having prints or photo books is the best way to share your photos with yourself, your visitors and people from different generations. If you are anything like me, you probably hover over your friends fridge checking out all the photo cards and school photos. We like to see printed photos, especially in our home! I have a huge gallery wall in my kitchen that is a collection of my favourite photos of our friends and family. It is almost the first thing people see when they come to our house.
Chances are when you do a professional photo shoot your photographer will have a print offering as part of the package or as an additional promotion. Having a few professional prints made is the best way to share your new lovely photos in your home with yourself and your visitors. Plus they make great personal gifts for your extended family members!
7. Commemorate Important Events.
Special events and and important dates are one of the best times to hire a professional photographer. When you have to plan, prepare for or execute that birthday party, graduation day, anniversary, you are not always going to be able to capture all the details of what made it so special. Having a photographer join in on your day will make sure that you have photos to remember just how dang good everything looked! They also have less bias so they will also make use that you have photos of your annoying inlaw, which will serve as proof that you are a generous and accepting family member!
8. Show The Passing Of Time.
Making the effort to have annual or biannual photos will help you capture the changes that life brings. It is a fun way for your family to look back and see how the kids have grown, the changes in fashion or to prove that your husband still looks good, even with less hair!
9. Spend Time With Your Family.
This is my favourite reason to have a professional take your photos. Family photos are a fun way to coordinate and spend time with your family. Most shoots are about an hour but it is an hour that is filled with laughs, hugs and cuddles. The shoot will often include a nice or meaningful location and can even include props that are family heirlooms or traditions. It is a fun way to spend time together as a family
10. Encourage Better Family Participation.
When you hire a Professional Photographer it adds significance to your family photos and often means that you will get better investment from your family. It is a great way to get extended family members to who otherwise would stay away from the camera to participate. It means that your husband might put on that shirt that you like him in but he never wears. Your kids are often excited by the new person and the big camera so I find that they usually put in the extra effort too.
11. Part Of Self Care.
This point builds on point 9 and 10. I believe that self care is doing something that may be difficult but will benefit you later or in the long run. When you invest in a professional Photographer you get all the benefits that come with building stronger relationships with your family through preparation, time spent together, better family participation, good gifts, sharable images, captured memories and a legacy to leave behind.
12. You Have Good Photos For When It Matters.
Hey did you just build a website, start a business or sign up for a new social account? Guess what you always need? That’s right, a photo! Use one of the great photos taken from your recent family photo shoot! If you ask, your photographer will probably be happy to get a couple of great headshots of you with your session.
Also a legacy to leave behind. It is so important for your friends and family to have photos of you and for you to have photos of that family member when they pass. Don’t make your family have to choose an old grainy 1980s Polaroid to use on your funeral memorial card!
